Major and Minor Chords Explained Simply

Major chords and minor chords on piano: the semitone formulas, all twelve of each with their notes, how to hear the difference and where they come from.

One note is the entire difference

A major triad and a minor triad built on the same root share two of their three notes. C major is C, E and G. C minor is C, E flat and G. The root and the fifth are identical; only the middle note moves, and it moves by a single semitone.

That semitone is responsible for most of the emotional vocabulary of Western music. Play the two chords one after another on a piano and the change is unmistakable even to someone with no training, which is why it is the first distinction every beginner learns.

The usual shorthand is that major sounds bright and minor sounds sad. It is a useful starting point and it is far too simple — plenty of minor-key music is energetic and plenty of major-key music is mournful. Trust the sound rather than the label.

Count the semitones

A semitone is the distance from any key to the very next key, black keys included. A major triad is four semitones from the root to the third, then three more from the third to the fifth. A minor triad is three then four. Both add up to seven, which is why the outer notes never change.

Work it through from D. Four semitones up from D takes you through D sharp, E, F to F sharp — the major third. Three more takes you G, G sharp to A — the fifth. D major is D, F sharp and A. Now do it as a minor: three semitones up from D is F, then four more is A. D minor is D, F and A.

Counting rather than memorising means you can build a chord on any note, including the awkward ones. It takes about five seconds once the habit forms, and it never fails you the way a half-remembered chart does.

All twelve major chords on piano

C major is C–E–G. D flat major is Db–F–Ab. D major is D–F#–A. E flat major is Eb–G–Bb. E major is E–G#–B. F major is F–A–C.

F sharp major is F#–A#–C#, also written G flat major as Gb–Bb–Db. G major is G–B–D. A flat major is Ab–C–Eb. A major is A–C#–E. B flat major is Bb–D–F. B major is B–D#–F#.

Only three of these — C, F and G — use white keys alone, which is why beginner songs cluster around them. The chord finder on this site labels black keys with sharp names for compactness, so a chord you know as A flat major will appear there as G#–C–D#. The keys pressed are the same.

All twelve minor chords on piano

C minor is C–Eb–G. C sharp minor is C#–E–G#. D minor is D–F–A. E flat minor is Eb–Gb–Bb. E minor is E–G–B. F minor is F–Ab–C.

F sharp minor is F#–A–C#. G minor is G–Bb–D. G sharp minor is G#–B–D#. A minor is A–C–E. B flat minor is Bb–Db–F. B minor is B–D–F#.

Three of these use white keys only: A minor, D minor and E minor. Together with C, F and G major they give you the six chords that carry an enormous amount of beginner repertoire, and they are the right place to start.

Train your ear to hear the difference

Pick one root — C is fine — and play C major, then C minor, then C major again, listening only to the middle note. Sing that note each time. Being able to sing the third is what turns recognition from a guess into a certainty.

Then close your eyes and have the chord finder play one of the two at random. Say ‘major’ or ‘minor’ before you look. Most people reach reliable accuracy within a week of doing this for two minutes a day, which is a remarkably good return for the effort.

Next, extend the test across roots, because it is noticeably harder to identify quality when the starting pitch keeps moving. Once you can do it from any root, you are hearing the relationship between notes rather than remembering a specific sound.

Relative majors and minors

Every major key has a minor key that uses exactly the same notes, called its relative minor. It starts three semitones below the major root. C major and A minor share all seven white keys. G major and E minor share the same notes, as do F major and D minor.

This is why a song can move between a bright and a dark mood without changing key signature. The notes stay put; what changes is which note the music treats as home.

Practically, it halves what you have to learn. If you know the notes of C major, you already know the notes of A minor, and a progression that sounds cheerful starting from C will sound melancholy starting from A minor using the very same chords.

Where major and minor chords come from in a key

Build a triad on each note of a major scale using only notes from that scale, and the qualities come out in a fixed order: major, minor, minor, major, major, minor, diminished. Musicians number these I, ii, iii, IV, V, vi and vii°, with capitals for major and lower case for minor.

In C major that gives you C major, D minor, E minor, F major, G major, A minor and B diminished. That list is not a coincidence but a consequence of the scale’s pattern of tones and semitones, and it is the same in every major key.

This explains why certain chords sound like they belong together. The near-universal I–V–vi–IV progression is, in C, simply C, G, A minor and F — three chords from the top of that list plus the vi. Once you know the pattern, you can work out the likely chords of a song in any key before you have played a note.

Inversions and voicing

The same three notes can be stacked in any vertical order and the chord keeps its name. C, E, G is root position; E, G, C is first inversion; G, C, E is second inversion. All are C major.

Inversions matter because they change how far your hand travels. Moving from C major to F major in root position is a jump; playing F as C, F, A keeps your thumb on C and moves only two fingers. Choose whichever inversion keeps the shared notes still.

They also change the colour slightly. A root-position chord sounds settled; a second inversion, with the fifth at the bottom, sounds as though it wants to move somewhere. Experiment with all three positions of C major and listen for that difference before deciding which to use.

Common confusions about major and minor

Assuming minor means ‘lower’ is the first. Only the third drops; the root and fifth stay exactly where they were. Play both chords slowly and watch which finger actually moves.

Counting white keys instead of semitones is the second, and it is why beginners get chords like E major wrong. Four semitones up from E lands on G sharp, not G, because there is no black key between E and F.

Learning shapes instead of notes is the third. A hand shape that works for C major will not survive the move to F sharp major. Learn the formula and the shapes take care of themselves.

Never testing yourself by ear is the fourth. Theory that you can only apply on paper is half a skill. Use the chord finder to play chords at random, name them before you look, and the knowledge becomes usable.
