Every piano keyboard repeats the same twelve notes. Seven white keys carry the letters C, D, E, F, G, A and B, and five black keys sit between them in a group of two and a group of three. Once you can see that pattern you can name any key on any keyboard, from a 25-key controller to a full 88-key piano.

A black key has two correct names. C♯ and D♭ are the same key, played the same way and sounding the same pitch on a piano; which spelling you write depends on the key signature and on how the harmony moves. E and F have no black key between them, and neither do B and C, which is why the black keys form groups of two and three rather than an even row.

A standard piano has 88 keys: 52 white and 36 black. The numbering restarts at every C, so the octave number changes between B and C rather than at A. Counting from the bottom, C4 is the fortieth key, which is why it is called middle C. To find it quickly, look for the group of two black keys closest to the middle of the keyboard and name the white key immediately to its left.

How many notes are on a piano

A standard full-size piano has 88 keys: 52 white and 36 black. They run from A0 at the far left to C8 at the far right, which is seven complete octaves plus a minor third. Almost every acoustic piano built since the late nineteenth century uses this range, and digital stage pianos copy it.

Eighty-eight keys sounds like eighty-eight things to memorise, but there are only twelve different note names in Western music, and the keyboard simply repeats those twelve over and over. Learn one octave and you have learned the instrument; everything to the left is the same pattern lower, and everything to the right is the same pattern higher.

The twelve are the seven white-key letters A, B, C, D, E, F and G, plus the five black keys between some of them. That is why a piano looks complicated and behaves simply.

The black-key pattern is your map

Look at the black keys and you will see them clustered in alternating groups of two and three. That grouping never changes anywhere on the keyboard, and it is the only landmark you need in order to name any key.

C is always the white key immediately to the left of a group of two black keys. F is always the white key immediately to the left of a group of three. Fix those two facts and every other white key falls out of the alphabet: D and E fill the rest of the two-black-key group, and G, A and B fill the rest of the three-black-key group.

Practise this the lazy way. Rather than counting from the left-hand end of the piano, glance at the nearest group of two black keys, put your finger on the white key to its left, and say ‘C’. From there, walking up the letters A to G — and starting again at A after G — names anything nearby in a couple of seconds.

Middle C and octave numbers

The notes are numbered by octave so musicians can say precisely which C they mean. In scientific pitch notation, an octave number changes at C, not at A. That gives you C4, D4, E4, F4, G4, A4, B4 and then C5 — the number stays the same until the next C arrives.

Middle C is C4. On an 88-key piano it is the fourth C from the left and the fortieth key overall, sitting close to the middle of the instrument and usually near the manufacturer’s name on an acoustic. It is also the note that occupies the short ledger line between the treble and bass staves, which is why it acts as the meeting point between the two hands.

One more landmark is worth knowing: A4, the A above middle C, is the forty-ninth key and is tuned to 440 Hz by international convention. Every other pitch is derived from it, each semitone multiplying the frequency by about 1.0595. Middle C itself comes out at roughly 261.63 Hz.

The lowest key, A0, vibrates at about 27.5 Hz, low enough that you hear the individual pulses more than a clear pitch. The highest, C8, is around 4186 Hz. Between those extremes sits everything the piano repertoire uses.

Naming the black keys: sharps and flats

A sharp raises a note by one semitone, which on a keyboard means the very next key to the right, black or white. A flat lowers it by one semitone, the next key to the left. Because each black key sits between two white keys, it has two names: the sharp of the white key below it and the flat of the white key above it.

So the five black keys in every octave are C sharp or D flat, D sharp or E flat, F sharp or G flat, G sharp or A flat, and A sharp or B flat. Two names, one key, one sound. Musicians call these pairs enharmonic equivalents.

Which name is correct depends on the music, not on the key. In the key of D major you write F sharp, because that scale already contains an F and needs a version of it; writing G flat there would give you two kinds of G and no F, which makes the notation harder to read. The sound is identical either way on an equal-tempered piano.

The virtual piano and the chord finder on this site label black keys with sharp names only, to keep the interface compact. When you move to written music you will meet both spellings, and knowing that they point at the same key removes most of the confusion.

Why there is no black key between E and F

Between B and C, and between E and F, there is no black key at all. This is not an oversight in the design; those pairs are only a semitone apart to begin with, so there is no room for a note between them.

The pattern of gaps in a major scale is the reason. Play C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C on white keys and you get the sound of a major scale, whose steps are tone, tone, semitone, tone, tone, tone, semitone. The two semitone steps land exactly where the black keys are missing.

E sharp and B sharp do exist in notation, and they mean F and C respectively. You will meet them in keys with many sharps. Likewise F flat is E and C flat is B. These spellings look odd until you realise notation is describing scale positions, not just piano keys.

Smaller keyboards: 25, 49, 61 and 76 keys

Not every instrument has 88 keys, but the pattern is identical on all of them, so a chart for 88 keys works everywhere. A 61-key keyboard gives you five octaves, most often running C to C. A 76-key instrument usually runs from an E up to a G, and 49-key and 25-key controllers cover four octaves and two octaves respectively.

What changes on a smaller keyboard is octave numbering, and this catches people out. The leftmost C on a 61-key board is not middle C, and manufacturers do not agree on how to label it. Find middle C by its position — the C nearest the centre of the instrument, or the C under the display on many keyboards — rather than by counting from the end.

Most beginner repertoire lives within about two octaves either side of middle C, which is why the virtual piano here shows two octaves at a time with buttons to slide that window up or down. If a piece runs off the edge, shift the octave rather than assuming you need a bigger instrument.

Drills that make note names automatic

Drill one, thirty seconds: find every C on the keyboard as fast as you can, using the two-black-key groups, and say the octave number as you go. Then do the same for F using the three-black-key groups. Two days of this and the landmarks stop needing thought.

Drill two, one minute: pick a random white key, name it, then name the key a fifth above it without counting one key at a time. C to G, D to A, E to B, F to C, G to D. Fifths appear in almost every chord you will ever play.

Drill three, one minute: play a note and name both enharmonic spellings of it out loud. The black key between F and G is F sharp and G flat. Saying both keeps you from being surprised when sheet music picks the one you did not learn.

Drill four, two minutes: close your eyes, place a finger on a black key at random, and work out where you are by feeling whether the group has two keys or three. This is how experienced players navigate without looking, and it is far easier than it sounds.

Mistakes that make the keyboard confusing

Counting from the left-hand end of the piano every time is the biggest time-waster. Use the black-key groups instead; they give you an answer in a second from anywhere on the instrument.

Assuming a sharp always means a black key is the second. F sharp is a black key, but E sharp is the white key F. The rule is ‘one semitone higher’, not ‘the black key above’.

Learning note names only in the treble clef is the third. The bass clef uses the same keyboard but different staff positions, and putting it off simply makes the left hand permanently harder. Learn a handful of bass-clef landmarks early: the F below middle C sits on the fourth line, and low C sits two ledger lines below the staff.

The fourth is memorising a chart without touching the keys. Naming notes is a physical skill as much as a mental one. Say each name out loud while you press the key, and the two become one habit rather than two.

Put the chart to use

Open the virtual piano and play a slow chromatic run of thirteen keys from one C to the next, naming every key aloud, black keys included. That single exercise contains every note name in music, and it takes under a minute.
