Tempo facts
How fast is 100 BPM?
A metronome set to 100 BPM plays 100 evenly spaced clicks every minute. Here is what that works out to.
Beat interval
600 ms60000 ÷ 100 = 600 milliseconds between clicks, or 0.6 seconds.Bar length
2.4 sFour beats of 4/4 at 100 BPM fill 2.4 seconds.Half and double time
50 / 200One beat per two clicks gives 50 BPM; splitting each beat in two gives 200 BPM.How 100 BPM feels
100 BPM is the round number everyone reaches for, and the arithmetic is friendly: 600 milliseconds a beat, ten beats every six seconds. It sits near the top of Andante and feels energetic without being fast.
What to practise at 100 BPM
100 is the default tempo on this metronome for a reason. It works for scales, chord changes, drum grooves and sight-reading alike, so when a teacher says 'take it at a hundred', this is the setting they mean.
Where you meet 100 BPM
A metronome at 100 BPM covers an enormous span of repertoire, from mid-tempo rock to marching cadences. Being exactly half of 200, it also serves as the half-time count for very fast material.
Half time and double time
100 BPM in half time is 50 BPM: the same music, counted with one beat for every two clicks. Double time is 200 BPM, where every beat splits into two even eighth notes. Both sit inside the 30 to 300 BPM range of this metronome, so you can switch between them and hear the difference straight away.
This relationship is the reason a written tempo and a felt tempo often disagree. Drummers and producers move between the two constantly, and it is also the safest way to learn something fast: build it at 50 BPM, keep the same subdivisions, then double the number once the movement is automatic.
