How fast is 80 BPM?
A metronome set to 80 BPM plays 80 evenly spaced clicks every minute. Here is what that works out to.

40 / 160One beat per two clicks gives 40 BPM; splitting each beat in two gives 160 BPM.How 80 BPM feels
80 BPM is a genuine walking pace: 750 milliseconds a beat, or four beats every three seconds. This is where Andante starts, and the Italian word literally describes walking.
What to practise at 80 BPM
80 is one of the most useful practice tempos there is. Fast enough to show whether a passage really flows, slow enough that mistakes are still repairable in the moment. Many players run an entire warm-up here without changing the setting.
Where you meet 80 BPM
An enormous amount of popular music sits near 80 — slow hip-hop, reggae felt in half time, and countless ballads. Because 80 doubles to 160, an 80 BPM count also underpins fast drum and bass patterns.
Half time and double time
80 BPM in half time is 40 BPM: the same music, counted with one beat for every two clicks. Double time is 160 BPM, where every beat splits into two even eighth notes. Both sit inside the 30 to 300 BPM range of this metronome, so you can switch between them and hear the difference straight away.
This relationship is the reason a written tempo and a felt tempo often disagree. Drummers and producers move between the two constantly, and it is also the safest way to learn something fast: build it at 40 BPM, keep the same subdivisions, then double the number once the movement is automatic.
